Battle for the Cawood Pocket

by Phil Johnson | February 3rd, 2011

As promised, here is the first of a series of new battle maps that will illustrate more detail from the novel, in order to mark Seelowe Nord’s 1st

anniversary. I have produced these maps mainly for the benefit of wargamers who have expressed a wish to refight some of the scenarios from the book on the table-top, especially now that the Flames of War system allows gamers to lay on much bigger battles than usual. All this said, anyone who has read the book will be interested in being able to orientate themselves to the action.

I appreciate that this is a very busy map indeed, but as readers of Seelowe Nord will know, the battle of the Cawood Pocket marks the turning point in the campaign, featuring both the Germans’ last thrust for the South Yorkshire coal-fields and the British counter attack, with 7th Corps hitting the German flank guard, commanded by Hauptsturmfuhrer Merkal of SS Totenkopf.

I won’t waffle on too much about the map as it should be pretty self explanatory. Along with the book, it should give you a pretty good idea of what the action would have been like. Another battle map will follow shortly that I hope will continue to wet your appetite. Remember, if you liked the book, please recommend it to friends or review it; every copy sold will help a UK Military Charity.

Keep low – move fast…
