BATTLE MAP – THE HOLME-ON-SPALDING MOOR BOX

by Author | October 29th, 2010

Here is the latest home made battle-map to illustrate one of the many scenarios contained within the novel Seelöwe Nord: The Germans are coming. My ability at map-making by digital means is nil, although I’m getting more to grips with IT as the weeks pass! Hence my very best hand-drawn version on display here!

Anyway, the map shown is that of the British dispositions around the Holme-on-Spalding Moor Box, which is one of several large ‘DELAY’ positions put in place to slow the German advance whilst GHQ British Home Forces speed their reserves northwards. There has been much interest recently, especially on this site, from wargamers who are keen to re-fight some of the Seelowe Nord scenarios. Some want to recreate the larger engagements with the new Early War – Flames of War ranges, whilst others want to fight smaller actions with rules like Rapid Fire and 28mm figures.

This map shows the entire British position. Please note that the Vickers/2 Pounder sections consist of a pair of each weapons system, co-located to benefit from the similar fields of fire required. Four of the platoon and company positions (indicated on the map) each have 1 x Vickers Medium Machine Gun and 1 x 2 Pounder Anti Tank Gun embedded in their position. Both of the Vickers/2 Pounder sections on Church Hill are sited on the Northern and Southern spurs, thereby giving each of them a 180 degree arc of fire to give depth support to the perimeter posts as needed. The composite infantry platoons and company positions shown are the centre of mass. The troops from each sub-unit will be spread out to cover a wide arc and will be mutually supporting, inter-locking and over-lapping.

Following this battle-map, hopefully in a few days time, will be a detailed map of ‘Hougoumont’ Farm, where Sergeant Jackson and his composite platoon of Army Regulars, Home Guard and RAF personnel make their gallant stand at the end of the novel. Hope this gives plenty of food for thought and illustrates the novel suitably; and for the wargamers amongst you, happy Kriegspiel!
